Glutithione, the unsung antioxidant in a mom’s routine

Glutathione is the most powerful, prevalent antioxidant in your body? Increasing your glutathione level will naturally increase your energy, detoxify your body and strengthen your immune system. WOW! Who out there reading this doesn’t need to increase your energy. I think every mom I know could use a little more of this… and without the diet soda. Also I find a lot of women I know suffer with PCOS, which can zap your energy, and even more… make it had to even reduce those dreaded fat deposits. A recent study they found that women that struggle with weight loss for a variety of reasons showed a significant decrease in GSH (Glutathione) level, a significant increase in DNA strand breakage and H2O2-induced DNA damage. That means a susceptibility to ovarian cancer. As well glutahtione  support diet change, sleep, exercise and mommy stress reduction. Yes… stress reduction!! So I’m just going to recommend if you are a mom, looking to change your health, or if you have struggled to lose weight, take a look at how you can improve your glutathione levels.

In the studies I’ve viewed they found that for best results they recommend you also supplement with N-Acetyl Cysteine to help the body absorb the glutathione, as well as to support it in leveling off the insulin condition. What is NAC? Well cysteine is found in beta-keratin, the main protein in nails, skin and hair. It helps maintain a healthy, youthful appearance by encouraging collagen production and skin elasticity. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a form of the amino acid cysteine that is most easily absorbed from supplements, and in fact some of the studies looking into this supplement have made it an obviously “NO” to add in as far as I’m concerned. Sulfer rich foods contain all of the natural NAC that you need, and so the easiest way for me to get enough has been with the making sure I get the best quality and potency of my fruits and vegetables rather than using some of those NAC supplements. Glutathione levels vary widely among fruits and vegetables due to environmental factors and the plant’s phase of development, and so it’s important you know where your food is coming from.  And following the plant based proteins again to support this I think of green as a precursor of the strong detoxifier, glutathione. Ta-da!! Amazing isn’t it! Nature is amazing!

The Superfood vs the Real Food?

How necessary are these new exotic foods to an otherwise healthful diet filled with real whole foods? Do people need to supplement their lunches with pitaya and baobab? A new warning that a diet rich in regularly produced fruits and vegetables (you mean like carrots, broccoli, bananas?… like our whole foods supplements) is probably sufficient for health and energy and that unusual foods (think “superfoods”) can be unpredictable and even possibly harmful. Many of us don’t think about the way it could impact the absorption of our regular meals, or how it may interact unfavorably with your daily medication. Some would argue that because of serious soil depletion, toxic pollution, and fast moving pace in our lifestyles that in the modern world eating regular old farmed food just isn’t enough to be healthy anymore. I get that, we need to bridge the gap. So yes, supplementation is key. But that doesn’t mean we need to bridge the gap with some special, amazing foods from a far away land.

We were just talking the other day, myself, Dr. Mitra Ray, and another friend, Linda, about these foods from other countries and one of those is quinoa . So let’s talk about that because many of those that jump on the Transform 30 diet think “gluten-free = quinoa”.  Obviously it is a nutrient-dense, gluten-free grain. That’s why my family originally used it. It comes from the Andes, where it has grown alongside potatoes, with roaming llamas and alpaca for thousands of years. Guess what? My family doesn’t use quinoa at all anymore. With the huge demand in Europe and the United States to have more healthy, gluten-free grains, quinoa—which is very high in protein—has become very popular, especially among foodies.

So now, Bolivians cannot afford to buy quinoa, and the quinoa-growing region of the country is also the most malnourished because those who grow quinoa for export now purchase refined grains to eat from the store. In Peru, quinoa now costs more than chicken. As well their own soil now faces decreased soil fertility, as farmers mine their soil to grow quinoa year after year to meet our demand, instead of using traditional methods of rotating their crops with animal pastures to restore fertility and prevent erosion. Asparagus production for export in Peru as well has led to water shortages that locals need.

In India, farmers have seen groundwater levels drop, and have been forced to go further down for water. From 180 or 190 feet, and now even as far down as 550 feet. And the water is getting dirtier, and is polluted more and more with pesticides and chemicals.

Then we get into that which rises to buying local. Transportation costs of food is one of the fastest growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions. A basic diet of imported products can use four times the energy and produce four times the emissions of an equivalent diet from domestic and local foods.

And many of our own precious resources have been “wildcrafted” to almost an extinction in their natural habitats, and this includes considering the growing essential oil business that I love.

Simply put, the richest nations in the world for the most part, are eating their way through ecosystems all over the world, and without a concern for where our future is going. If you want to be organic, you want to be engaged in the “green” discussion, then you have to admit that you are still a consumer, even if you are eating gluten-free quinoa and fair trade chocolate. Over-consumption and sustainability are not compatible to this lifestyle, no matter how eco-friendly we try to be about it. So we need to stop feeling like it’s our right to eat superfoods every day, on demand.

The people who grow it for us often don’t have enough to eat at all because of it. And we need to think globally starting now. That brings me to the Juice Plus+ farm to capsule initiative. Release Toxic Energy Before 2017

Now is the time to let go of the toxic energies you’ve been dragging around. We all do it. We pack them up, carry them like honored treasures. Even I have done this for far too long. I started unfollowing people on Facebook this year, and it felt good. I just let them go. I didn’t unfriend them, I didn’t hate them, I just released them to open up space for the joyful people that I care the most to be with. Those toxins build up, take up space and will never help you get to where you want to be in life. Some people are givers, and some are takers. Takers don’t feel badly if they’ve taken advantage of your friendship. Takers don’t feel badly if you are easily replaced in their life. Takers spend their lives sucking energy from others in the pursuit of feeling important. Givers spend their lives dragging the left over toxins from the relationship around, doing the hard work, and giving away their energy in order to help others feel worthy. But it’s time to stop this cycle and start allowing all of the purpose and joy into your heart … where it was meant to go in the first place.

Releasing Toxic Energy

Low Carb Vegan Waffles I Shred10 Recipe

I crave waffles… all the time. I went through the flax milk and high protein waffle phase, however I am doing a fat fast right now, and so I want to keep it on the lower carb end of the spectrum. I tried the keto diet a few months ago, but with my adrenals there is a fine line that I have to walk. So I am now going at it again but in a different way. Instead of loading up on the MTC oil, and Bulletproof coffee, I am doing Thrive Algae Oil as my main oil. I am still getting some saturated fats into my diet, but no where near as many. Thrive gives me those healthy mono-unsaturated fats that I am lacking because of my avocado allergy.

You’re feeling really sad right now thinking about no avocado, right? Me, too. Especially because these would be perfect with a little avocado, cucumber, apple and basil relish. Don’t you think?

Savory Relish I Shred10

So I found this oil, and I am using it for that heart healthy eating, and loving it.

Also I wanted to try the VeganEgg because I have gone back and forth a few times over the last few years from vegan to vegetarian mostly due to eggs. When we moved back to the Seattle area a few years ago it was the hardest week of my life. I turned to eggs for comfort after being vegan for a lot of years. Then I went back to vegan when I went paleo. I had decided to try paleo because my diet consisted off a LOT of quinoa. It felt so good. So I went with it and was doing great. But the last six months my hormones have been going through a transition, my adrenals are again feeling my overdoing it, and it has been like a landslide with weight gain. Now we’re experimenting because I am determined to take back my health and my waist size to where I want it to be.

So I started really thinking about vegan Bulletproof or vegan keto, and how I could redefine it for me. That took some thinking, and some internet browsing. I found some interesting recipes out there, but none that really hit the spot so I created this. For my daughter I did use the pastured eggs, but for myself I used the VeganEgg and it was amazing.

So here is the recipe for one waffles. It will take a little longer to cook with the VeganEgg than a normal waffle. When using real eggs you can make two waffles at a time. However a VeganEgg tip was that for more than two eggs you may need less water and I didn’t want to jinx myself. Feel free to double the recipe if going vegetarian.

2 VeganEgg (or pastured eggs)
1 tbsp Thrive Algae Oil
1/4 can Native Forest Organic Premium Coconut Cream, Unsweetened, 5.4 Ounce
1/4 tub Chive & Onion Daiya Cream Cheese Style Spread
3 tbsp Tigernut flour
1 tsp Organic Fijian Seasoning


  1. Heat your waffle maker up and spray with coconut oil to keep from sticking.
  2. Mix two tbsp of VeganEgg with 1/2 cup of ICE COLD water. They say to blend if you want it fluffier, but it whisks up pretty easily.
  3. Warm coconut cream and cream cheese, and blend into the VeganEgg mixture.
  4. Add in your tigernut flour, seasoning and algae oil. Blend to a nice batter.
  5. Add to waffle maker. I let it cook until the back looked done, and then flipped it around so that the front was now turned and in the back. This was because I felt that the front wasn’t cooking as well as the back. It does take a little longer but watch to keep it from burning.
  6. Enjoy this savory waffle as a stand alone, or use it for a sandwich substitute as a wrap.

NOTE: You could easily use the plain cream cheese with sweeter options like pumpkin spice to make a sweet waffle as well.

The Secret Autoimmune Disease

Be forewarned, this is going to be a rambling post. I like to write as I am thinking and this is like my brain unwinding all of the information.

We hear about autoimmune diseases all of the time. Many people believe that it is because we are diagnosing these illnesses more. Or it could be that we are being exposed more and more to the components that are the underlying cause of autoimmune disorders. So when we hear autoimmune you automatically think of Lupus, Hashimoto’s, Chron’s, RA, Type 1 Diabetes, although there are at least 80 known autoimmune disorders. When you have an autoimmune disorder, your immune system does not distinguish between your healthy tissue and antigens.  I have had environmental allergies since I was very small, and then food allergies since I was a tween, and there are similarities. Both allergies and autoimmune disease can be considered hyper-immune responses, whereby the body’s immune system becomes supercharged, attacking or responding to substances that shouldn’t normally draw such attention.  Because these two classes of disorders involve a misplaced inflammatory response we see an overlap somewhat in regard to the symptoms. So are you having allergies, or are you having autoimmune issues? And when do they collide? In response I have seen some research showing patients having both Eosinophilic esophagitis  and sticky blood. Some forms of sticky blood have been documented to have unusual anaphylaxis associated with it. An allergic reaction can also involve what they call a coagulation cascade. Consider that our eosinophils directly communicate with T cells and mast cells. Histamine is released by those mast cells, white blood cells and platelets. When those mast cells bust out the histamine, it calls on a quicker blood flow, and that healing blood clotting that our body relies so heavily on. So taking your antihistamine or supporting your mast cells I believe can be a huge support to our systems while we’re trying to heal. My daughter had high, high, high levels of eosinophils in her blood work. So I have to start to consider what I want for her in the future by looking at me where I am at, as well as my past.

I have taken antihistamines since I was 11. By the time I was 18 I realized that I was having anxiety attacks and that Benedryl was also a good “anti-anxiety” medication. I didn’t realize any of the damage that over use can have because when you are 18 you can take on the world. Even though I had almost died several times from allergic reactions to food, and I was going to live to 100. My daughter and I still have that pact. So 100 it is. Therefore, I have to take care of myself. That’s why I really listen to my body when it is not functional. I have to ask, “what’s going on? What I didn’t know when I was so young was that I probably was helping my body for the 18 months I was over using antihistamines. You see I have finally had the proper testing to show that I have what I suspected, sticky blood. This is very common with my genetic mutations, and I suspect is the same problem that my mother has. With MTHFR we often see people put on an aspirin therapy. Taking aspirin, ibuprofen and some antihistamines stop platelets from working normally, which can increase bleeding due to thinning of the blood. What that means in human talk is it can create that extra sticky blood clotting effect. We know that the gut health has a huge impact on our wellness, and those allergic responses, as does the strength of our mast cells. So consider that our stomach lining renews itself regularly by getting adequate blood flow.

My sticky blood is due to genetics that cause the blood to be more viscous (thicker and stickier) than normal. This increase in the thickness of blood showed up as moderately high cholesterol. As the creator of Paleo Vegeo you can see what a laugh that is. When our blood vessels get damaged, our platelets go out and plug up the hole to fix the problem. The problem is when those sticky cells then start to accumulate in the space where the damage is being repaired. Because of this that Lp(a), test and not LDL test is the real cholesterol story that we need to address. Especially if 25% of the population could have genetics linking them to a more likely outcome of having that sticky blood problem. Sticky platelet syndrome can be considered an acquired platelet function disorder which can be addressed as an autoimmune disorder.  If we determine that at least 25% of the population has an MTHFR mutation, and in the UK the stats show that this sticky blood is responsible for 1 in every 5 cases of recurrent miscarriages, why aren’t we talking about this more?

MTHFR Iron and LDL Blood

Several months ago I started having problems with my adrenals again. Lots of fatigue on a daily basis and then weight gain and other symptoms that made me think my thyroid was getting into the game. Now it doesn’t hurt to say that I stopped the T30 at this time which was probably masking some of my issues and making me feel better. I am glad I stopped long enough to figure out what was wrong, but now I also know that the T30 is a long term lifestyle need for my body.  General low-grade symptoms of having a sticky blood problem are:

  • headache and migraine.
  • memory problems.
  • dizziness and balance difficulties.
  • visual disturbances.
  • blotchy skin
  • joint pain.
  • fatigue.

Sound familiar? When I started self treating my thyroid, I immediately had some edema, and I had started having what I call Fire Veins. It really feels like fire is in your veins. Extra severe joint pain started happening as well as muscle pain. I felt a little like I was falling apart. I started taking my daily iron again. I thought this is adrenals + low ferritin for sure. Did you know People with low levels of iron in the blood have a higher risk of dangerous blood clots, according to new research due to… Sticky Blood!!! OMG my head is spinning. These low iron levels the are now strongly showing to be associated with higher levels of the factor that shows you’re at risk for blood clots. Blood clots… sticky blood… genetics… autoimmune… it’s these things that we don’t put together that we should be.

When I was born I had a disease that caused smaller lungs and a heart murmur. This is a hole in my lower tricuspid valve. Sticky Blood is this immune disorder where 1 in every 3 patients has a heart valve abnormality. Interesting, right? It’s linked to not just the blood clotting, but also recurring miscarriages and premature birth. I can check both of those off. In this case this autoimmune disorder’s abnormal antibodies attack proteins and fats in the blood; specifically phospholipids. This attack on these proteins and fats is what causes the blood to become excessively sticky. Did you know that with type 2 diabetes your red blood cells become sticky. I have talked about this before in discussing why the T30 is so helpful with blood sugar control because you’re getting all of those rich fruits, vegetables and fiber. That’s because they say we should:

And my ND wants me to stick with daily omegas, and started me on a time release niacin, cqo10 and red yeast rice. I also added in tomato paste. Yes you read that right. Researchers did a study and found that platelet build-up was reduced three hours after supplementation with tomato extract equivalent to two or six whole tomatoes. I forgot this morning and grabbed an organic tomato at the store to nosh on.

I recommend if you’ve had migraines, undiagnosed blood related issues, high cholesterol along with fertility issues, PCOS or any other autoimmune disorder have them do that extra Lp(a) test when you get your cholesterol checked. I will be having my blood drawn again in three months to check on if we’re corrected some of this and I will keep you updated. And of course I will continue to wonder why it took half of my life to start to figure this all out. Because I am going to live to be 100… my daughter and I have that pact.


School year germs, and the difference in the varied Juice vitamin products

My little bug, she gets sick every single year. Starts at the first of the school year. Last year we went to the Children’s Museum a few days before school started… okay that was probably not a great idea. Now yes, I do homeschooling, but we go to a cooperative program through the district twice a week. What it means to me when I hear that first sniffle is, here comes the croup. Now I give my daughter the encapsulated whole foods every day. Emptied into a smoothie made with coconut milk for the healthy fats, oat milk and organic baby food!! Yes, I am that mom. I will sneak every bit of nutrition in that I can, when I can. I can positively say that for the first time in my daughter’s life last year she did not have a cold. Not croup. Going into a new school year we were reflected back on how different her life is now, and I am so grateful to the wellness changes I have seen in my daughter.

Get Your Glutathione Guys ….and girls

I could listen to Dr. Hyman talk all day talk about the importance of nutrition… you may not realize yet what a nutrition geek I am. Listen, when you have as many food allergies as I do, connected to as many cross proteins in my environment you start to read about nutrition, a lot. My husband is amazing with all of the changes in diet and living. He has been a ROCKSTAR throughout the process and in fact makes a lot of foods like this weekend he is making the sauerkraut that we’ll be eating in about six weeks. Archaeologists have discovered that early hunter gatherers used the fermenting process, mainly as a means of preservation. The Chinese fermented foods and hailed the fermenting juice as a treatment for many ailments I happen to LOVE sauerkraut, and always have But there is nothing like homemade, and I recommend you try it out.

The biggest a-ha moment I’ve had this year when I watched and old video of Dr. Hyman talking about glutathione. Glutathione is the “mother of all antioxidants” and until as of recently the only for of whey out there in the body building / crossfit community was hydrolyzed, isolated and packed with nasty excitotoxins. YUCKERS!! Why do you think so many fit healthy guys are coming into the local clinics with very low testosterone in their systems. Hormone problems have become a huge problem with men, not just women. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health studied the effects of glutathione depletion on testosterone-producing cells in both young and old rats. Changes in the oxidant/antioxidant environment of aging Leydig cells {testosterone-producing}have been shown to be correlated with the reduced ability of these cells to produce testosterone

High temperature processed whey creates a high level of toxins that you aren’t getting in the cold processed whey, and you don’t get that glutathione boost with this high temp whey either. Like those in the paleo world have found, the more processed, the worse it is for your body. Is {vegan/vegetarian} Keto Possible?

A friend just asked me, can you get keto while taking the whole foods supplementation??

Well, yes, if you are following the big trend right now of ‪ketosis‬, you wouldn’t do the shakes because you’ll be like, NO… that’s 1/3 of my carbs.
Carbohydrate (total, not “net”): less than 50 gm/day, but ideally closer to 30 gm/day. However most using the Keto apps are using net carbs, the carbs without fiber and in fact recent studies show that soluble fiber can lower blood glucose levels. Right? So net carbs are 12, and that’s out of 30 – 50 they are allowed per day.

Unfortunately since we need to keep our body in ketosis without people are going all ‪‎keto‬ without many veggies and practically no fruits (a few berries/day). So those folks of course could benefit from taking whole foods encapsulated to supplement the thousands of phytonutrients they would normally get from a diet rich in fruits and veggies. Does that make sense? Your body has thousands of needs for the antioxidants and the vitamins and minerals that you are not going to get without supplementation, and most supplementation out there is just garbage.

Of course you can also use some of the latest modifications on the Florida ketosis powders without losing all of those veggies and that’s what I am looking to do now that 3.0 is available. I was not a big fan of the salts as a stand alone supplement. Beta-hydroxybutyrate levels are higher in people on the ketogenic diet, and children with the highest levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate had the most severe heart problems in studies that I have read recently. However when used with prebiotics, and vegan, well I have decided to give it a try. The whole foods shake I use is also Low-Glycemic and with the powdered fruit and veg it can give you the transformation you are looking for. It’s All A Journey & We’re In It Together

Sometimes even I get bogged down with all of the hate and sadness in the world. It rolls over you like a giant wave and eventually you give in. That’s when a short look through Heidi’s photos and a quick bit of texting… Even just that little burst brings that spark of hope back to bring you back to life. So then you surf over to the pages of other friends to see smiling babies, and happy dogs and cats… And goats! And your cousin sends you a stampede of goats that you watch maybe too many times this week. And then it’s Friday!! And you made it through the week on the wings of angels. Sad things will always be there, but good friends, good efforts and God are there for us whenever you need them. Just ask.

I am always reading, learning, and sometimes cycling back to something that I learned about when it suddenly fits in my life. It is what living creatures do. We change and grow throughout our life, or at least we hope to. Sometimes we get stuck, but it’s not really stuck. You know what I mean? We have to engage something, incorporate something to get to the next level. I remember when I started Beachbody. It had been on my horizon before, but it was trendy. I don’t do trendy. 😉 However at the right moment, and for the right connection I was meant to make in this life it fit. It moved me back to fitness, gave me a purpose for me. I know a lot of moms that will understand that. It’s easy to get lost in motherhood and suddenly you don’t know who you are at all. When I gave up my salon it was hard. When I left Corporate life it was hard. When I decided to reduce my coaching clients and be a mom, hard. Every single time we close a door, or open an opportunity it is going to be hard. Teaching my daughter, hard.

So I opened myself up to opportunity, and I became a certified personal trainer, and had visions of being a fitness teacher. Some of that has come true, but not in the manner I would have thought it to happen. That is when I was eating traditionally, but hating how much meat it involved. So I went into the 21 Day Kickstart and went vegan. Suddenly it was like WOW! Things started to flow in my life. However I was eating GOBS and GOBS of quinoa. LOL… Like seriously. My life was superfood shakes and quinoa, and salad. No fruit. But hey, lots of quinoa cookies and zucchini bread! So then I started looking at Paleo. Gah!! I cannot do the meat. But it kept calling me. So I went and created a new vein of paleo and called it Paleo Vegeo for those pescatarian, vegetarian and vegan paleo wannabe peeps like me. Cool right? I kept looking for that magical protein shake. The superfoods were changing, and so I found glutathione… and curcumin! More life changes. More oils, more wellness, more change again and again.

So then I opened myself back up to more opportunity and more wellness and spiritual connections, more WOW! Partnerships change, but knowledge keeps happening when you are open to it. I know that every block of knowledge is going to either help someone else, or be something that will eventually help me. So I listen, I learn, I hoard knowledge and hold onto it for when it’s needed. Whole foods, they have come back around, differently because I am eating a ton of fruit and veggies, and I am slowly healing my sugar addiction. It could be worse, because I could have totally caved into my DNA and GABA deficiencies and gone for the liquid GABA. I didn’t though. I learned about aminos, about the addition genes, and just kept adding whole foods. I am getting better. I am changing. It’s what it’s all about. It’s the purpose of living, and I am grateful for it! <3
