Glutithione, the unsung antioxidant in a mom’s routine

Glutathione is the most powerful, prevalent antioxidant in your body? Increasing your glutathione level will naturally increase your energy, detoxify your body and strengthen your immune system. WOW! Who out there reading this doesn’t need to increase your energy. I think every mom I know could use a little more of this… and without the diet soda. Also I find a lot of women I know suffer with PCOS, which can zap your energy, and even more… make it had to even reduce those dreaded fat deposits. A recent study they found that women that struggle with weight loss for a variety of reasons showed a significant decrease in GSH (Glutathione) level, a significant increase in DNA strand breakage and H2O2-induced DNA damage. That means a susceptibility to ovarian cancer. As well glutahtione  support diet change, sleep, exercise and mommy stress reduction. Yes… stress reduction!! So I’m just going to recommend if you are a mom, looking to change your health, or if you have struggled to lose weight, take a look at how you can improve your glutathione levels.

In the studies I’ve viewed they found that for best results they recommend you also supplement with N-Acetyl Cysteine to help the body absorb the glutathione, as well as to support it in leveling off the insulin condition. What is NAC? Well cysteine is found in beta-keratin, the main protein in nails, skin and hair. It helps maintain a healthy, youthful appearance by encouraging collagen production and skin elasticity. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a form of the amino acid cysteine that is most easily absorbed from supplements, and in fact some of the studies looking into this supplement have made it an obviously “NO” to add in as far as I’m concerned. Sulfer rich foods contain all of the natural NAC that you need, and so the easiest way for me to get enough has been with the making sure I get the best quality and potency of my fruits and vegetables rather than using some of those NAC supplements. Glutathione levels vary widely among fruits and vegetables due to environmental factors and the plant’s phase of development, and so it’s important you know where your food is coming from.  And following the plant based proteins again to support this I think of green as a precursor of the strong detoxifier, glutathione. Ta-da!! Amazing isn’t it! Nature is amazing!

What is everyone else … saying about Glutathione

“GSH (Glutathione) is the unsung antioxidant…the one that makes all the others work.” ~Robert C. Atkins, MD

“Glutathione circulates constantly throughout your body neutralizing free radicals and removing dangerous waste products and toxins from your system while increasing your level of energy. When your Glutathione level is high, your overall health is high. You feel good and you look good. You fight off minor illnesses quickly, you have plenty of energy, and you feel mentally and physically alert… you’re at an optimal level of good health.” ~Alan Pressman, DC, Phd, CCN
“Without glutathione, other important antioxidants such as vitamins C and E cannot do their job adequately to protect your body against disease.” Breakthrough In Cell-Defense By: Dr. Allan Somersall, Ph.D., M.D. with Dr. Gustavo Bounous, M.D. FRCS(C)

“Glutathione promotes longevity, protects the body against heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, psoriasis, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, and boosts the immune system strength and is useful fighting autoimmune diseases and other health problems of older adults.”GSH Your Body’s Most Powerful Protector GLUTATHIONE, Third Edition By: Jimmy Gutman, MD, FACEP

“Your life depends on glutathione. Without it, your cells would disintegrate from unrestrained oxidation, your body would have little resistance to bacteria, viruses and cancer, and your liver would shrivel up from the eventual accumulation of toxins.”
“Glutathione levels also diminsh as we age and many diseases normally associated with aging have been linked to glutathione deficiency.”
“Clinical evidence links low glutathione levels to the most common illnesses of our time as well as newly emerging diseases.”
“Because all other antioxidants depend upon the presence of glutathione to function properly, scientists call it ‘the master antioxidant’.” From booklet: “Glutathione: Essential Health AID – Antioxidant. Immune Booster. Detoxifier” By: Dr. Jimmy Gutman, MD, FACEP

“Glutathione has potent anti-viral properties – if you raise the glutathione level you can stop the replication of most any…intracellular pathogen…but glutathione deficiency produces a pro-viral effect.” Paul Cheney, MD

If you are reading this and amazed… then msg me to learn more about the one simple change you can do to raise your levels of glutathione with whole foods.

Get Your Glutathione Guys ….and girls

I could listen to Dr. Hyman talk all day talk about the importance of nutrition… you may not realize yet what a nutrition geek I am. Listen, when you have as many food allergies as I do, connected to as many cross proteins in my environment you start to read about nutrition, a lot. My husband is amazing with all of the changes in diet and living. He has been a ROCKSTAR throughout the process and in fact makes a lot of foods like this weekend he is making the sauerkraut that we’ll be eating in about six weeks. Archaeologists have discovered that early hunter gatherers used the fermenting process, mainly as a means of preservation. The Chinese fermented foods and hailed the fermenting juice as a treatment for many ailments I happen to LOVE sauerkraut, and always have But there is nothing like homemade, and I recommend you try it out.

Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition. It’s the root of so much bad and so much good in our lives. The biggest a-ha moment I’ve had this year when I watched and old video of Dr. Hyman talking about glutathione. And that’s what made me do a happy dance when I learned about the Action Whey Shakes made with the glutathione rich undenatured whey. Now not only is it a great product for myself, but it’s also good for men!!

Now you don’t have to just get your glutathione from pastured cows like my husband. I am the creator of the Paleo Vegeo lifestyle so I love that you can also get this from holistically good fruits and vegetables.  Get your greens because spinach, broccoli, asparagus are all great sources. As well your potatoes, avocado, squash, okra, cauliflower, walnuts also have high glutathione per serving. My mother-in-law swears by milk thistle and it is an excellent source of the antioxidant compound silymarin, which may help to prevent glutathione depletion in the liver.  I love adding super organic green powder into my paleo vegan protein shake to get that extra oomph as well.

Glutathione, the “mother of all antioxidants” in the Organic Shake at Emerals Essentials and what it an do for Crossfit Training Men

Glutathione is the “mother of all antioxidants” and until as of recently the only for of whey out there in the body building / crossfit community was hydrolyzed, isolated and packed with nasty excitotoxins. YUCKERS!! Why do you think so many fit healthy guys are coming into the local clinics with very low testosterone in their systems. Hormone problems have become a huge problem with men, not just women. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health studied the effects of glutathione depletion on testosterone-producing cells in both young and old rats. Changes in the oxidant/antioxidant environment of aging Leydig cells {testosterone-producing}have been shown to be correlated with the reduced ability of these cells to produce testosterone

The researchers found that indeed, depleting glutathione levels in these cells reduced the rats’ testosterone production by about 40%. When antioxidants were administered, testosterone production was maintained at normal levels, and when a compound was administered specifically to boost intracellular glutathione, testosterone levels actually increased in the test animals. What they found was that indeed, depleting glutathione levels in these cells reduced the rats’ testosterone production by about 40%. If antioxidants were administered, testosterone production was maintained at normal levels. When a compound was administered specifically to boost intracellular glutathione, testosterone levels actually increased in the test animals.

High temperature processed whey creates a high level of toxins that you aren’t getting in the cold processed whey, and you don’t get that glutathione boost with this high temp whey either. Like those in the paleo world have found, the more processed, the worse it is for your body. And if you are someone that really loves to workout, you aren’t realizing how important the whey you are taking is to your body. Physical exercise influences the GSH metabolism in skeletal muscles and your live, and exhaustive exercise decreases both liver and muscle glutathione consistently.

It also helps us deal with free radicals, glutathione recycles life back into our cell…  I love that idea that Dr. Hyman talks about. And with the levels of free radical in your daily life, you do not have enough of it, and that is why this is such an important amino acid. It’s going to detoxify as well. It’s not JUST for men. It works with your cells, and therefore ladies it’s not going to turn you into a dude. It’s not a steroid. In fact, one study involved women with ovarian cancer who were being treated with chemotherapy. Some of the women were also treated with intravenous glutathione. Those given the glutathione not only had fewer side effects from the chemotherapy but also had better overall survival rates. It works with your body, and your cells to make them work better!

Watch this video and learn more about the changes that happen when you add a glutathione rich whey and other organic supplementation into your diet, and head over to try out the Action Whey Protein today to boost your glutithione the natural undenatured way.

FARE Allergy Awareness Month Should Be Mandatory Eduction for EVERYONE!

FARE Allergy Awareness Month

It is the FARE Allergy Awareness Month, and I love the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxix Network because of all that they do for all of us with allergies. FARE is the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to food allergy awareness, education, research, and advocacy, and provides information, programs, and resources about food allergies and anaphylaxis. I have spent so many hours of my life in the ER hooked up to benedryl-ish drips after receiving multiple epi-pens to save my life. It’s not a fun experience, I promise you that. No one wakes up and says, “Hey… I wish I had a food allergy!” It’s a complication in life that could lead to death and in fact did this last summer for that adorable 13 year old twin girl at camp. Just one mistake.

So why aren’t Food Allergies Taken More Serious?

Food Allergy Awareness Month Should Include Education for Everyone!

Two years ago I went past our local food coop, PCC Natural Market, to pick up some quick easy items for a field trip tomorrow, and they had a sampling of date muffins. I checked the ingredients and everything looked great. I let my daughter have one, which she put in her mouth and immediately spit out… “Peanut Butter, Mom! That has Peanut Butter in it!”

How on earth she knew that there was actually peanut butter in it I’ll never know, because she has been kept away from peanut butter her entire life. She just new. Divine Intervention is all I can tell you. The store staff didn’t seem to care. I gave them my name and number, but I highly doubt they will ever call to apologize. When you can’t even trust the coop…. who do you trust?

If stores are going to sample products, they should have to be educated on the proper practices. For instance if you are going to have to muffins that look similar, you have to have LABELING of some sort to show that half of those muffins contain PEANUTS! These are items that our products have to say, there for you need to label your demo items as well. You need to understand that a life can be gone in a matter of minutes from a food allergy reaction. Ask any parent, any spouse, and sibling that has lost someone from a food allergy reaction and they will pour their heart out to you on how important education and labeling is.

We had to stop going to Jamba Juice this summer because we had some sort of allergy to a smoothie that shouldn’t have contained anything we are allergic to. Now I will say that they do have postings… but I used to run six Jamba stores in the Pacific Northwest and contamination in one of these stores is from lack of education and sheer laziness and negligence.

Food Allergy Idiocy

I recently had a friend post on Facebook about how she didn’t mind if you were not of her religion, that was fine, but she hated when someone would go out of their way to belittle her belief system. One of her friends posted back that they “also didn’t care what your food allergy issues are but don’t force them on me”. This guy is an idiot. Plain and simple. He should be required to take latex proteins until he because sensitive to them and live the rest of his life dealing with the food and environmental issues of having an allergy for being just so off the mark. People can try to force their religion on you, and it won’t kill you. If you are the jerk that sends your kid to school every snack day with peanut butter crackers in a class where one child has a severe off the charts peanut allergy because “your kid loves them and that’s all that matters” … you need your parent card taken away. I get the mama bear attitude, I AM a mama bear and I will rip anyone to shreds that puts my child in harms way… but the difference is that taste preference should not prevail over LIFE! And most of these people are “Pro Life”… so what is the difference in the life of my child, and an unborn child? PROTECT them!!

Stepping off the soap box… but I had to share because it is just too important and hopefully this will save a life. Another think to consider is the upcoming holiday seasons. From Halloween treats, to Turkey Trots to the full month of December, they can be a very frightening thing for those with allergies. Don’t make potatoes with soy milk without making sure someone is not allergic to soy. Don’t bring peanut butter treats to school parties. And please have some allergy friendly treats for the goblins and ghouls coming to your home this year. Place a teal pumpkin near your front door to make sure folks know that your home is a safe home. Can You Get Fit Without Looking At Your Nutrition?

I hear it all of the time, “I’m just going to change my diet.” But I have to be the first to share that being skinny doesn’t always equate to being healthy. Health is a well rounded creature, and the cravings you will continue to have are directly related to that inner health issue.

When I work with a client I have them record their meals, even if they only do it via photo. I need to know what they are eating. They think I just want to make them stop eating all of the things they love, and I admit that sometimes I will do that. But what it all really is about is getting to the core of what is going on functionally inside of that body of yours. We all have more going on than we think when it comes to how we are eating, and how that relates to our hormones. I think that for women that means Estrogen often enough, and so that is going be the first focus as I go into talking about this more in depth over the next month.

Hormones, Nutrition and Fitness

Hormones – we all have them, we joke about them and women hate them. They are an ever present part of our lives and yet we don’t really as individuals know very much about them or how they relate to our overall health. When you exercise your body then has some increased energy needs. You need to be able to have the ability for the increase muscular, metabolic, respiratory and cardiovascular demands when you step up to the plate. When you finish you will still have needs for metabolic stimulation, repairing muscles, restoring cortisol levels. Without proper nutrition you body may see an increase in blood pressure, start eating away at the muscles instead of the fat, or even slow the metabolic rate. There are so many hormonal responses you could be having if you are not eating properly while trying to reach your fitness goals, and I want you to start thinking about this hormone connection.

For women there is more to it. Young women after they’ve had their cycle will be at the lowest level of estrogen in their month. Women closer to menopause may see a spike or bursts in their estrogen levels. Estrogen determines if those carbs you’ve had or the fats are going to be fuel your body during your HIIT or Turbo cardio session. There are over forty estrogen metabolites and they become good or bad estrogen. It is all depending on where you are at with your hormones really that will determine the type of fitness program you should be looking at, as well as the types of foods to use as part of your wellness lifestyle.

You can’t just expect a one solution all of the time to suit your health. That means having a variety of good, healthy meals and snacks around to support your system. There is more to it that I’ll go into tomorrow, but just know that working out will lower your estrogen, and for some of you low estrogen may be a problem.

What I eat for support

I have found personally that if you have a higher level of estrogen in your body then you need to eat your kale, your raw juices, apples, ginger, lemon. You want to boost your gluathione which is a requirement to break down the excess estrogen in your body. You also want prebiotics not just probiotics.

Also foods in the Brassica family like broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kale, collard greens and cabbage should be considered for someone looking to break down extra estrogen, but I like to cook it to reduce the thyroid imbalance properites.  And who here doesn’t love some cauliflower rice or roasted brussel sprouts?? Or a yummy kale salad or kale chips in the afternoon? The reason why is that indole-3-carbinol is produced by these yummy foods through our bodies and this gets absorbed as DIM (diindolylmethane) in the small intestine. This has been shown to selectively bind to the estrogen receptors in your body. What that means is that these foods will help detoxify the excess estrogen, halt some of the conversions to estrogen into those dangerous metabolites and bring a more balanced hormonal system into play.

Root vegetables are great to help your liver naturally process estrogen. The more estrogen you are dealing with, the more root vegetables you may want to include. Stay away from the bag, sluggish fats that you may want to pile on those because that will slow down your liver and slow down the body natural processes.

Lignans can interfere with the natural production of estrogen, and if your body can’t handle the estrogen it’s already dealing with, this can be a problem. This is why soy is so bad for those women with metabolic issues as well. Women with estrogen dominance should stay away from over indulging in nuts. Those that are high in phytoestrogens are sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachio. Also almonds are a little higher, too. Women with major metabolic issues may even want to steer clear of walnuts, hazelnuts and dare I say cashews. Sorry, ladies. Flax seed and other seeds and nuts can also be added to your diet, but don’t over do it. You can also add in some soaked legumes, pea protein, cold washed soy protein, good fatty fish like wild caught salmon, and make sure if you are lower in estrogen you get plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially after a hard workout. Vitamin C and complex B vitamins are essential in raising your estrogen levels back up after a workout and keeping headaches, daytime fatigue, dry skin and an inability to focus in on tasks at work.

For women going into menopause with those major bursts of estrogen foods like bok choy, swiss chard and then those soaked and sprouted quinoa and buckwheat items are actually great here as well as the complete shake. This is where you are going to get the nutrients and the fiber your body needs to flush the estrogen out of your body quickly and efficiently. And when you are dealing with those mood swings you need to make sure you are getting enough of those essential fatty acids. You can eat avocados, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, beets to help with some additional vitamin A to support your hormonal swings.

Wheat & Simple Sugars : Why Your Child Could Be Immune Suppressed

Simple Sugars makes our kids sick

You may read the topic and think I’m a crazy person, but I want to share with you some information that’s been around since a large study in the early 1970’s. Just 400 calories of simple sugars (glucose, fructose, honey, juice, sugar, etc.) decreases you immunity. The cells ability to engulf bacteria is left at that decreased level for five hours.

There was a 1973 study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the researchers at Loma Linda University gave volunteers 100 grams of sugar (20 teaspoons, roughly the amount in a liter of soda). The researchers then drew blood from the volunteers and mixed in some bacteria. They found that infection-fighting white blood cells from people who had just gorged on sugar gobbled up many fewer bacteria than those who had just fasted or eaten an unsweetened starch.

Let’s take that a step further. We know that a typical human has about 5 liters of blood, and a reading of 99 mg/dl, which is considered pre-diabetic – which does effect your immune response. Just one teaspoon of sugar contains 5 grams which is all that is needed to hit that reading. So the 4.95 grams of sugar in the blood of a person just short of being pre-diabetic equals a little less than one teaspoon. Crazy, right?

So why am I including wheat to this topic of sugar and immune suppression?

How often do you feed your kids. What’s in their lunch box, What do you think your kids are getting for treats at school and preschool?

When we eat simple sugars at every meal our bodies cannot respond to disease. Along with that the peptides in gluten cause immune suppression or addiction to wheat. And our children already have less developed immune systems and are touching everything, hugging friends and have become these little petri dishes living with runny noses, coughs and upset stomachs. They are getting some sort of simple sugar and wheat at every meal, every snack. They are never able to catch up internally to fight off the bacteria in their bodies. I had never thought of this really in this manner before listening to Dr. Herzog at this conference I went to..

So at the conference an amazing pediatrician gave us a long talk called ‘Pediatrician Model of Health’ all about nutrition and our kids. This included all of this information on the immune system, but so much more. So let me sum it up for you:

  • All body processes are intertwined especially the gut and immune system. Structure determines function. Good food turns on good genes.
  • We are not slaves to our family’s medical history.
  • The American Medical Association recommends organic foods. Benomyl has been connected to Parkinson’s disease. It kills neurons. But this is just one chemical and we know so little about so many of these chemicals and pesticides they are using on our food. Organic is best.
  • A way to help our children eat healthy food is adding in smoothies (With kale, broccoli, or sprouts, berries, citrus, pineapple, wheat grass, and protein powder— my favorite new vegan protein/fiber shake and creating a rainbow on their plates. Teach them to get in all of their colors. I often use the capsules added into other meals and they don’t even notice it.
  • We must supplement for our children. Our soils are depleted and our produce is very different from our grandparents produce—lacks nutrients. A children’s chewable whole foods supplement is a great support to your child’s system.
  • Reduce toxic load. Use less chemical self care and home cleaning products.
  • Inflammatory foods are Wheat (Wheat Belly)
    Simple Carbs (Sugar)
Excess Omega 6 (from fast food)
  • Use safe omega supplementation (Omega 3 to balance Omega 6s)
  • Children are immune suppressed. Build a healthy immunity through playing in the dirt. (antibacterial essential oil hand sanitizer.)
Probiotics, Vit D (2,000-5,000 for adults)
Feeding children inflammatory foods leads to pro-inflammatory diseases and autoimmune disease.
  • The Children’s Health Study shows research that supportive nutritional supplements can help your child long term. Let me help get your child into the health study and get their supplements free*

Health Benefits of Dill Pollen I Urban Gardening

Health Benefits of Dill Pollen

There are so many natural health benefits out there, that one could really research and learn all of their life and never learn about them all. I read about dill pollen on an amazing site – Pollen Ranch. They were the first in the nation to collect and store dill pollen. I recently purchased my first dill pollen, and thought, “WOW! What have I been eating before this!!” We love dill in our house, but nothing compares to real, fresh, pure dill pollen. Seriously! My favorite salad dressing these days is olive oil, coconut vinegar, Himalayan salt, garlic, lemon essential oil, and dill pollen. It’s oh so yummy!!  There are so many items you can use dill pollen with, and I find that my allergies are better when I’m using it – and that’s something that is priceless to me. I have had such an amazing season between curcumin and the dill pollen that it’s been like living a normal life. 😉 Who knew? If you click on the picture you will be able to learn more about dill pollen with Marx Food – and they gave me a great idea of adding dill pollen to my tomato soup! Cannot wait to try that out. I think that Dill should be in every Tower Garden because you can harvest those dill flowers yourself, or just as a great herb to add to your cooking.

Benefits of Dill (from Pollen Ranch)
  1.     Digestion: Dill itself is an appetizer and therefore extensively used in culinary. The essential oils present in it are stimulant in nature and activates secretion of bile and digestive juices. These oils also stimulate peristaltic motion of the intestine.
  2.     Insomnia: Essential oils found in herbs have a peculiar property. They are simultaneously stimulant and sedative or hypnotic, that is, they stimulate as well as pacify. The essential oils in dill are no different. The Flavonoids and vitamin-B complex present in its essential oils, being stimulant in nature, activates secretion of certain enzymes and hormones which have calmative and hypnotic effects, thereby helping have a good sleep.
  3.     Hiccups: Hiccups occur due to various reasons, primarily due to trapping and repeated upward movement of gases through the food pipe and secondarily due to certain allergies, hypersensitivity, hyperactivity and nervous malfunctioning etc. Dill can help in all of these situations. Being a carminative, it helps expulsion of gases and also reduces gas formation and being sedative, it helps calm down hiccups due to allergies (which is actually hypersensitivity of the body towards certain foreign elements and bile), hyperactivity, nervous disturbances etc.
  4.     Diarrhea: Diarrhea is caused mainly due to two reasons; indigestion and microbial action. For the first, dill can certainly help as it has very good digestive properties. For the second, it can help again since the Monoterpenes and Flavonoids present in its essential oils are germicidal or bactericidal in nature and can help cure diarrhea by inhibiting microbial infections.
  5.     Dysentery: Dysentery is primarily caused due to fungal infections. Here too, dill can help as its essential oils are disinfectant in nature and help inhibit fungal infection effectively.
  6.     Menstrual Disorders: The Flavonoids in essential oils of dill are stimulant and Emenagogue in nature, that is, they stimulate secretion of certain hormones which in turn help maintain proper menstrual cycles. Respiratory Disorders: Kaempferol and certain other components of Flavonoids and Monoterpenes in the essential oils of dill are anti congestive and anti histaminic in nature and help clear congestion in the respiratory system due to histamine, allergies or cough.
  7.     Oral Care: Dill seeds and leaves are very good mouth fresheners. Apart from that, the essential oils in it are germicidal, anti oxidant and disinfectant in nature. Thus they help end microbial infections in the mouth as well as their anti oxidants minimize the damages caused to gums and teeth by the free radicals.
  8.     Cancer: Now it is the turn of the Monoterpenes to come under the lime light. These chemoprotective Monoterpenes, being stimulant in nature, activates secretion of an enzyme called glutathione-S-transferase (the radical glutathione is an effective anti oxidant) which is very effective in neutralizing carcinogens, particularly Cyano- and Benzo- derivatives and free radicals, thereby protecting from cancer. The other anti oxidants in essential oils of dill also contribute to this.
  9.     Other Benefits: Dill is relaxant, fortifying (strength giving), diuretic (increases urination helping removal of toxic substances from the body), carminative (helps removal of gases), anti spasmodic (prevents cramps), anti flatulent, stimulates lactation (galactagogue) and endocrinal secretions, enhances libido due to presence of Arginine and last but not the least, it ensures bone and dental health being a good source of calcium.[5]

Mother’s Nutrition **Before Pregnancy** May Alter Function of Her Children’s Genes

Epigenetics: Mother’s Nutrition **Before Pregnancy** May Alter Function of Her Children’s Genes

We’ve read a lot recently about how as a woman, your health means so much more than just being healthy for yourself. It’s about what you are going to pass on to your children. Not only does this mean that what you eat may be changing your DNA. Imagine that. You are not passing on the healthy genes your grandparents passed onto their children, because your eating habits are actually changing your DNA. A New Scientist article recently quoted a study that was done on rats. It showed how specific supplements injected into pregnant rats alter the DNA expression of their children. So too does injection of specific supplements change their behavior. You’ve probably seen some of this in your children with food coloring, etc.Back in your school biology class all of you probably learned that DNA is your genetic code. In other words it’s the cellular instructions to make proteins. When our DNA is damaged, we subject ourselves to numerous health problems. Our cells become inhibited in producing what our bodies need and our bodies become challenged in re-growing healthy cells. That being said, have you ever heard of Pottenger’s cats? O

ne particular question that Pottenger addressed in his study had to do with the nutritive value of heat-labile elements — nutrients destroyed by heat and available only in raw foods. Dr. Pottenger then devised a series of controlled experiments along with Dr. Alvin Foord, a professor of pathology at the University of Southern California and pathologist at the Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. In the first experiment, the cats were divided into two groups. A control group of cats was fed a raw food diet composed of raw meat, raw milk, and cod liver oil. A second group was fed a diet composed of cooked meat and processed milk (CFD) plus the cod liver oil. <br></br>The 1st through 4th generation of Pottenger’s cats were great, happy, lots of great little kittens. There was no 4th generation of CFD cats. No CFD cats of the 3rd generation could give birth to healthy offspring. Either the third generation parents were sterile or the fourth generation cats died before birth.

So what do you think now that we have given birth to the third or fourth generation of kids eating processed foods… what do you think we’ve done to them? These cats developed diseases and illnesses near the end of their lives. Then the third generation of cats began manifesting unhealthy conditions in the beginning of their lives and many died before six months of age. Like I said, there was no 4th generation of CFD cats. A really great article on the these bad bio-franken-created foods is here – http://environment.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/food-how-altered/When you switch over to a healthier lifestyle you will be moving to a mostly unprocessed style of eating, and you need to focus on organics when you use anything processed at all. Processed foods almost always mean genetically modified. Never forget that altering the DNA of your food directly affects the human or animal’s DNA that eats it. I love using the whole food capsules as a natural supplement, and then working with your doctor to get the added needed prenatal supplementation (keeping in mind talking about the folate vs folic needs for your personal genetics)

Sometimes a good complete protein shake can be helpful especially when you are busy, you may not be getting enough nutrients on the go. Pregnancy and work or motherhood can be taxing, right?

Your Fitness Is Defeating Your Hormones

How Your Fitness Is Defeating Your Hormones

Have you heard about the hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid axis or the HPT Axis for short? This is the most important hormone area in my opinion for those trying to lose weight or balance hormones. A study done found that when you do long high intense workouts the Serum T and Free Testosterone will start to decrease in a number of weeks. This has an effect of that “low t” syndrome that you may have heard about. When you exercise you want to feel those great endorphins that are released by your pituitary gland when it’s working well. Overexercising then starts to cause this inflammatory issue within the HPT Axis. And then add in this over abundance of hormones that you don’t want raised and you start to inhibit your endorphin production.

Also they’ve studied and found that for both men and women this decrease, especially the lower FT level is a significant predictor for loss of muscle mass. I saw a Finish study that showed that doing a heavy lifting session of just 5 reps produced the highest testosterone response. And so for those lifting to increase testosterone you want to make sure most of your resistance training is being done with compound exercises that work many muscle groups at once. Think CVX or Total Synergy.

I know so many moms that get 3 hours of sleep, then do a long run and cannot figure out why their testosterone is so off. Let me share with you, cortisol reduces and antagonizes free testosterone levels. This cortisol dysfunction promotes abdominal fat gain and again, muscle loss. Stressing your body out by overtraining, too much stress and not enough sleep is a one way ticket to this HPT Axis crash.

Yesterday I talked a lot about estrogen, but that is because estrogen inhibits thyroid activity. That leads you down the road to low thyroid. If you have the right compliment of progesterone, testosterone and balanced cortisol levels your thyroid is a happy camper. That means you have to balance out the testosterone in order to have functional estrogen.

Dr. Willian Hrushesky believes that natural killer cell activity and interleukin 2, both powerful immune system components, are compromised by estrogen dominance and promoted by adequate progesterone. His opinions were presented in the Journal of Women’s Health.
Dr. John  Morrow, PhD and Dr. David Isenberg PhD say that estrogen has been shown to decrease the size of the thymus [depresses immune system] and to cause a reduction in the level of thymic hormone in the blood.

So how are you going to balance out that testosterone, for you that means less heavy, and more HIIT. Something like Focus T25 is going to be better for someone dealing with PCOS and higher testosterone levels than someone that has low testosterone and needs to boost it.

So it’s time to balance out those hormones

And having overdone it your entire life by keeping those estrogen levels low has been linked to dementia. I think that’s another reason why you are seeing more and more fitness professionals asking women to reduce their workouts, get them done quicker and placing more value on taking time to stretch and relax. It’s time to think, since if you are here you hopefully are already thinking ancestrally, so when you think about movement think about your ancestors a little bit more.

Mark Sisson has said you should lift heavy things, sprint a little, and move at a slower pace. And my favorite doc, Dr. Daniel Amen, recommends to optimize your hormone levels throughout the day you should do daily interval training, balance your insulin levels, sleep well and lower your stress. Getting the right workout matters, and it has to be the right one for your hormones, too. Am I right? You will give your body a better fighting chance if you functionally approach your fitness in a manner that works with your body. Otherwise you will be like most of the studies I have seen that show group after group that saw almost no changes in their weight regardless of weeks of putting in hours and hours of time on the treadmill. So make sure you balance your hormones with the right workout. Lower estrogen, lower testosterone… eat right and try something fast and simple like P90X3 or even Body Beast. For those with high testosterone, struggling with PCOS give a good HIIT workout like Focus T25 or Combat a look over.

Finally, take a listen to Dr. Hill as he talks about hormone balance, and natural ways to support your system which you know I am very passionate about.

If you are looking to get tested to see where your hormone levels are head over to my coaching lab and order your own tests. http://bijacoaching.com/LabTests I would be happy to help you in any way that I can, but this can help and you can take your results to your doctor to start putting together an action plan for health.

Detox and the role in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The information I learned that effects those wishing to detox, with CFS

My daughter had a lot of tummy issues when she was born. The more or less forced us into taking her off of goats milk, and into 9 months of horror. She wouldn’t nurse because afterwards she would just scream. They wanted me to give up dairy, and grains, and I was already not well myself most of the time. I didn’t see how I could possibly eliminate more food from my plate. Who know several years later I would just that, but I wasn’t in a place where I could do that at that moment. So they put her on expensive formula, and then acid reflux medication, and getting to a year was something I just couldn’t wait to hit.

We were doing all organics, and as she started eating we were doing all pastured meats too. The majority of her diet was dairy. As was mine. What I didn’t know was that there is something called a dysfunctional methylation cycle. My daughter lived on organic chocolate milk, cheese sticks and yogurt squeezers. Sound familiar to any one else out there?

So what effect does this have on the body?

So dairy, as we know from me talking about the Ocean Avenue shake, or at least undenatured whey gives you this boost to glutathione. Some of what she was getting should have been giving her some of this natural glutathione support. The belief is that for those with CFS or those on the Autism spectrum, that there is digestive issues that surround both gluten and casein. Casein is in all of those yummy dairy products.

But WHAT if the real problem is with an inability to detox, and we’re filling our bodies with hormones and items that will ferment in the digestive tract. We have all of this sugar too. Then we have an overgrowth of candida, and our bodies still can’t detoxify. We start filling up with all sorts of other toxins from our environment and our foods. Our bodies cannot react in any other way beyond: Fatigue, Inflammation, Pain, Problems Regulating Our Emotions, Sleep Dysfunction and other symptoms encompassing the brain. All of these items can be found to be very similar to both CFS and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Many CFS patient have low glutathione levels. Many of those on the Autism Spectrum have low glutathione levels. If you struggle to use the glutathione that is entering your body – then all of these items would start being problems for you, because you need glutathione support in your system. But your system is struggling in the glutathione production department.

There is also the production of melatonin from serotonin as well as the metabolism of the catecholamines require methylation, without this we see sleep dysfunction. It’s all connected. Now when my daughter is tired, she gets irritable and is a totally different person. When I am feeling fatigued by my adrenal issues I am the same way, cranky, maybe hyperactive, and irritable. What if that is the problem for your autistic child when they creatively yell or throw a tantrum. Fatigue maybe?

At the International Conference of the AACFS they talked a lot about the methylation cycle, how it’s a major part of the biochemistry of sulfur and methyl groups in the body. How it’s tightly linked to folate metabolism (think about MTHFR) and B12 and enabling the use of these amino acids to provide energy to the cells. And with 40% of the population carriers of the MTHFR genetics, 10% where this has been activated through birth or epigenitics… and then approximately 1/3 of Americans who are missing an important gene needed to create and recycle glutathione and we have now created a mess that is going to be a breeding ground for more CFS kids, and yes there is guides for kids with CFS/ME now…which breaks your heart. And I know I’m seeing a greater number of children being determined to be on the spectrum, as well. So there has to be something more to this.

I know that this is really just me talking out loud, and you may or may not understand what I am talking about, or you may think it’s all hooey. But I think it’s something important to think through. Dr. Wilson talked about sulfur, and I just didn’t get it … until now. If you can’t effectively detox, then you won’t ever heal. For every CFS patient out there, I think this one sentence is huge!! You know more than anyone how much you want to heal up and feel better.

I believe what happened to me when I went on the two week vacation was what they call Relapsing.

Relapsing (Crashing) (160): Many CFS patients have chronically low glutathione levels. According to this Hypothesis, when the level of stressors is temporarily increased, the levels of reduced glutathione become more severely depleted, and this produces the so-called crashing phenomenon. After a period of rest, reduced glutathione levels are increased to the chronically low levels that existed prior to the increased stressors.

So I am going to work on some of this information over the next few months and see if I can create a parent/child friendly detox program that we can both do together and see what we find. In the meantime, we’ll be getting our sulfur

Detoxing From Heavy Metal Poisoning Can Be Toughest For Vegans

Detoxing From Heavy Metal Poisoning

Heavy metal poisoning is far more common than you may think.  You can get it from mercury tooth fillings, immunization shots, poor environmental factors. The average adult inhales thousands of trillions of mercury atoms a day from a mouthful of amalgams; fish provides trillions more, the air more, and in children, vaccines provide surges of trillions of mercury molecules per day in the form of ethyl-mercury, which is vastly more toxic than metallic mercury. Insulin molecules are directly assaulted as are insulin receptor sites.

Did you know that the geometry of your insulin can be changed by mercury? If it is the message that insulin has arrived to give glucose to the cell is not received.

Mercury is the most potent enzyme inhibitor that exists; it is in a class of its own and well deserves its title as the most toxic non-radioactive element. Since mercury and lead attach themselves at these highly vulnerable junctures of proteins, they can readily provoke biochemical shifts and then morphological changes in the body.

The formula I’ve most seen online to get rid of heavy metals – a gel cap 2x a day filled with a couple of drops each of cinnamon, clove, cassia and oregano.

“Supplements helpful in the detoxification process include: cilantro, Vitamin C, selenium, garlic and others. Eating a clean diet, free of pesticides, is a must for a detoxification program. I encourage my clients to eat whole foods, with adequate amounts of plant based protein sources while detoxing. Eliminating the refined sugar, refined flour, and refined salt will help any health condition and help any detoxification program.

Here’s the deal, however, you have to have sulfur in your diet to detox properly, even with the support of something like essential oils in your plan. Nutrition is so important and we are so busy thinking about the medicine, we often forget the nutrition.

In a study these doctors, Dr. McCully,  and Dr. Ingenbleek, MD that took place in Chad, they looked at twenty-four rural male subjects ages eighteen to thirty, and fifteen urban male controls, ages eighteen to twenty-nine. (Women in this region of Chad could not be studied because of their animistic beliefs and proscriptions against collecting their urine.)

The rural men were apparently healthy, physically active farmers with good lipid profiles. Their staple foods included cassava, sweet potatoes, beans, millet and ground nuts. Cassava leaves, cabbages and carrots provided good levels of carotenes, folates and pyridoxine (B6). The rural Chadian diet is plant-based because of a shortage of grazing lands and livestock, but subjects occasionally consume some B12-containing foods, mostly poultry and eggs, though very little dairy or meat. Their diet could be described as high carb, high fiber, low in both protein and fat, and low in the sulfur-containing amino acids. The urbanites added in meat. The results fround that the near-vegetarian subjects were thinner, with poorer muscle tone, and showed subclinical signs of protein malnutrition.

So are you deficient in sulfur?

If you aren’t vegan, eggs are among the highest dietary sources of sulfur, more so than meat. Another major source of sulfur in your diet is methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM. The plant foods that are typically high in MSM include Brussels sprouts, garlic, onions, asparagus, legumes and kale. Mmmm… Kale!! Two B vitamins contain large amounts of sulfur. These are thiamin, or vitamin B-1, and biotin, which is also known as vitamin H or vitamin B-7. Biotin is present in large amounts in a variety of protein foods, including egg yolks, sardines, nuts and legumes. Other good sources include cauliflower, bananas and mushrooms. I also take a great B Complex daily because I just don’t feel like with my allergies I’m getting enough.

Dietary sulfur helps to improve the health of your joints, skin, hair, nails and connective tissues. It can also slow nerve impulses, potentially helping to reduce pain. So let’s think about that… if you struggle to detox, you have issues with inflammation, joint pain, and you aren’t getting the sulfur needed to detox – you’re going to just be pushing the toxins out and into other areas of your body, and causing more inflammation and pain. And what you are most likely doing if you aren’t flushing the toxins out of your body, is flushing the good bacteria out of your body instead. So you’re making the digestive issues worse, and that is the lead brain in all of this we’ve learned. Your gut is in more control than you think.

So this sulfur enables the transport of oxygen across cell membranes. You want the essential oils to be able to pass in through the cell membranes. And since sulfur is directly below oxygen in the periodic table, these toxic elements have similar electron configurations. Not only does sulfur have a unique action on body tissues, but it will decrease the pressure inside the cell. In removing fluids and toxins, sulfur affects the cell membrane. Sulfur is present in all cells and forms sulfate compounds with sodium, potassium, magnesium, and selenium. Organic sulfur, in addition to eliminating heavy metals, regenerates, repairs and rebuilds all the cells in the body.

Get it right, support the detox and hopefully feel better. And tomorrow I’ll share why I got into this in the first place… because it all comes together if you can wait long enough to really figure out my thought process. See you tomorrow for Part 2.
