Get Your Glutathione Guys ….and girls

I could listen to Dr. Hyman talk all day talk about the importance of nutrition… you may not realize yet what a nutrition geek I am. Listen, when you have as many food allergies as I do, connected to as many cross proteins in my environment you start to read about nutrition, a lot. My husband is amazing with all of the changes in diet and living. He has been a ROCKSTAR throughout the process and in fact makes a lot of foods like this weekend he is making the sauerkraut that we’ll be eating in about six weeks. Archaeologists have discovered that early hunter gatherers used the fermenting process, mainly as a means of preservation. The Chinese fermented foods and hailed the fermenting juice as a treatment for many ailments I happen to LOVE sauerkraut, and always have But there is nothing like homemade, and I recommend you try it out.
 

Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition. It’s the root of so much bad and so much good in our lives. The biggest a-ha moment I’ve had this year when I watched and old video of Dr. Hyman talking about glutathione. And that’s what made me do a happy dance when I learned about the Action Whey Shakes made with the glutathione rich undenatured whey. Now you don’t have to just get your glutathione from pastured cows like my husband. Glutathione is the “mother of all antioxidants” and until as of recently the only for of whey out there in the body building / crossfit community was hydrolyzed, isolated and packed with nasty excitotoxins. YUCKERS!! Why do you think so many fit healthy guys are coming into the local clinics with very low testosterone in their systems. Hormone problems have become a huge problem with men, not just women. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health studied the effects of glutathione depletion on testosterone-producing cells in both young and old rats. Changes in the oxidant/antioxidant environment of aging Leydig cells {testosterone-producing}have been shown to be correlated with the reduced ability of these cells to produce testosterone

The researchers found that indeed, depleting glutathione levels in these cells reduced the rats’ testosterone production by about 40%. When antioxidants were administered, testosterone production was maintained at normal levels, and when a compound was administered specifically to boost intracellular glutathione, testosterone levels actually increased in the test animals. What they found was that indeed, depleting glutathione levels in these cells reduced the rats’ testosterone production by about 40%. High temperature processed whey creates a high level of toxins that you aren’t getting in the cold processed whey, and you don’t get that glutathione boost with this high temp whey either. Like those in the paleo world have found, the more processed, the worse it is for your body. And if you are someone that really loves to workout, you aren’t realizing how important the whey you are taking is to your body. Physical exercise influences the GSH metabolism in skeletal muscles and your live, and exhaustive exercise decreases both liver and muscle glutathione consistently.

It also helps us deal with free radicals, glutathione recycles life back into our cell…  I love that idea that Dr. Hyman talks about. And with the levels of free radical in your daily life, you do not have enough of it, and that is why this is such an important amino acid. It’s going to detoxify as well. It’s not JUST for men. In fact, one study involved women with ovarian cancer who were being treated with chemotherapy. Some of the women were also treated with intravenous glutathione. I came across this smoothie recipe, and I think I almost fell over.

Healthy Paleo Bean Smoothie for body building for vegetarian crossfit

Ingredients: 

1/4 cup raw hulled pumpkin seeds
1 scoop NitroFusion, or similar protein powder
1 cup soymilk
1 cup water
1 banana
1 can canellini beans, rinsed [aka white kidney beans]
[optional] cocoa powder to taste

Directions:
Blend all ingredients to desired consistency

Total stats: 974 calories, 125g carbs, 68g protein, 18.5g fat, 43g fiber

This was on a Vegan Bodybuilding website, and I wanted to say… body building for WHO exactly? I don’t know about you but 974 calories is most of my daily diet. WOW!!

So what kind of bean smoothie do I use? 

This is more up my alley in terms of healthy and wellness for a bean smoothie.

Now of course you are probably saying, “What? Beans are not paleo??” … but many in our community are starting to change the way we look at beans as a one-size fits all sort of plan. You know I am all about finding your own nutritional truth, right? A fantastic article on Chris Kressers’ blog went into details about the pros and cons of beans, and the ONE study that most of your paleo pushers use to put the fear of beans into your diet. I recommend you read it, and if you tolerate beans, then this is a fun recipe revamp that we use at my house.

Great Northern Protein Shake

Ingredients: 
6 ounces raw pineapple
4 ounces flax or hemp unsweetened milk
1 cup frozen berries
1 can (16 ounces) Eden Great Northern Beans or your own soaked Great Norther beans, rinsed and drained

The Isagenix Athlete’s Pak contains first off the IsaLean Shake, which is also using an undenatured whey like JM Ocean Avenue’s shakes use, flaxseed like the WAVSmart shake offers. Now remember that it also has guar gum. Guar gum be described as a natural food thickener, similar to locust bean gum, cornstarch or tapioca flour. It is said to have significantly more thickening ability than cornstarch, at a fraction of the cost. The use of guar gum as an ingredient in non-prescription diet aids was officially banned in the early 1990s by the FDA. It would bind with liquids in the stomach and swell, causing a feeling of satisfying fullness. This swollen mass could also cause dangerous intestinal and duodenal blockages, however. Guar gum was declared unsafe and ineffective for use as a non-prescription diet aid, although it is still used in small amounts as a food thickener and binder.It has a lot of vitamins, but doesn’t appear to have anything that is real whole foods. The IsaLean is sweetened with yucca root, honey, vanilla bean and about 14 grams of sugar.

The Ionix Supreme has what they call their proprietary blend of fruit extracts, and blackstrap molasses. You can google about all of the benefits of blackstrap molasses, but you are here on this site because you are living a different life, a paleo vegetarian life. It goes through three boilings of the sugar syrup and the majority of sucrose from the original juice has been crystallized. The blackstrap molasses is still mostly sugar by calories. Blackstrap molasses goes through extensive boiling and probably destroys the integrity of the product.

The Truth About Your Blood Sugar 

I was always told that the secret to a diet like the Atkins diet was that it would balance out my blood sugar. So I wanted to know more about what my blood sugar was and why it needed balanced out.

The blood sugar concentration or blood glucose level is the amount of  glucose (sugar) present in the blood of a human or animal. The body naturally tightly regulates blood glucose levels as a part of metabolic system in your body. If you are not a diabetic, then generally speaking your blood sugar doesn’t change much at all during the day. It may rise a little after a good carbohydrate packed meal, but your body does what it needs to {which could be part of the problem here} to balance everything back out.

Insulin is the problem for those that are diabetic, and it’s actually a hormone that is made in the pancreas. It plays a big role in metabolism. Your other brain, the digestive tract breaks down these carbohydrates in your body and converts it to glucose, a form of sugar that enters the bloodstream. You body uses that for energy.

If you are insulin resistant your body produces the insulin, but doesn’t use it effectively. The glucose (sugars) build up in the blood instead of being absorbed into the cells which is what leads to Type 2 Diabetes. Insulin is required for carbohydrate, fat and proteins to be metabolized, and so if you are resistant then muscle, fat and liver cells do not respond they way they should to this hormone. Experts believe that our obesity epidemic, and especially the inability to get rid of that fat around the waist is being caused by this insulin resistance.

So how does this impact fat loss? 

Your body has two forms of energy however. It can pull energy from sugars, or fats. Did you know that? And did you know that your brain runs on glucose? If there is no sugar available for your body, it will then turn to fat to start producing energy. Don’t you love that? I know I always enjoy reducing the fat cells in my body, because a tiny fat cell is a happier fat cell.

How Stuff Works shared: 
The first line of defense in maintaining energy is to break down carbohydrates, or glycogen, into simple glucose molecules — this process is called glycogenolysis. Next, your body breaks down fats into glycerol and fatty acids in the process of lipolysis. The fatty acids can then be broken down directly to get energy, or can be used to make glucose through a multi-step process called gluconeogenesis. In gluconeogenesis, amino acids can also be used to make glucose.

In the fat cell, other types of lipases work to break down fats into fatty acids and glycerol. These lipases are activated by various hormones, such as glucagon, epinephrine and growth hormone. The resulting glycerol and fatty acids are released into the blood, and travel to the liver through the bloodstream. Once in the liver, the glycerol and fatty acids can be either further broken down or used to make glucose.

So let’s break it down…

This means you don’t have to go round and round in this cycle if you do not want to. With the right nutrition your body can create the energy it needs, reduce the fat cells, and run like a well oiled machine… and all without making a batch of pasta. How great is that? When you aren’t eat a lot of carbs and grains your body can use things like coconut oil (healthy fats) to generate the energy your brain needs. Curcumin for injury or cancer using Empower Ocean Avenue Supplements

I had a great conversation with one of the Distributors in our team last night about the role of curcumin and how it’s being used. Now pain begins when specialized receptors (nociceptors) are activated following damage to joint tissues.  And when immune cells first detect any signs of tissue injury or stress, they activate a cellular protein, called nuclear factor kappa-B (or NF-kappaB or Nuclear Factor.) This protein is the main ‘switch’ that turns on the inflammation in the tissues in your body. Activated NF-kB signals the cell (via many pathways, including through the activation of inflammasomes) to begin to produce numerous proteins involved in inflammation and tissue repair. And I believe that can be painful. And I also believe that how you are using Curcumin is going to be different based on what you are trying to heal with it.

Studies about how use of Curcumin is helping people

What the studies say are the following:

“Curcumin can inhibits this special inflammatory chemical (NF-kappaB). Skeletal muscle is often the site of tissue injury due to trauma, disease, developmental defects or surgery.  If you ask around you can see that  so far there is no effective treatment out there to stimulate the repair of skeletal muscle. Yet studies show that muscle regeneration after trauma is greatly enhanced following systemic administration of curcumin, an inhibitor of the NF-kappaB.”

This is my belief {please consult your doctor specific own medical advice as I am not a doctor} is for a lot of us with serious painful trauma that is many years old, a little may Empower be better than a lot because a) with an older injury healing could initially be just as painful as the injury is, and b) you may find that you aren’t absorbing it.

So what to do with a long painful injury? A paper from Korea published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry (a very highly regarded journal) indicated that curcumin has been reported to be capable of preventing the death of neurons in animal models of neurodegenerative disease.

They studied the effect of curcumin on cultured neural progenitor cells (like stem cells) and found that curcumin exhibits a biphasic effect: at low concentration (0.1 to 0.5 microMolar) it stimulates cell growth and proliferation while at high concentration (>10 microMolar) it is cytotoxic (kills cells).

At the LOW concentrations, curcumin enhanced neurogenesis (nerve cell growth) in mouse hippocampus and increased neural plasticity (like adaptability) and repair. So maybe with nerve type damages you need to recommend a slow start to Empower.

So what if you aren’t absorbing enough curcumin?

If you aren’t absorbing enough curcumin that probably means you need to adjust a few things. If it’s for a pain injury I recommend you up your omega’s to about 2,000 mg a day for a few weeks. (when I say omega’s I’m ALWAYS talking about Omega-3’s) Earlier this month, review papers of the curcumin studies stated: “Extensive clinical trials over the past quarter century have addressed the efficacy of curcumin and promising effects have been observed in patients with various pro-inflammatory diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease and arthritis.”

A little off topic of injury these studies are being performed at Indiana University and Purdue university.

SO the findings are that when omega-3 DHA and curcumin are combined, they have the ability to slow down the growth of breast cancer cells. These compounds worked best when combined, than when tested separately.

The DHA+curcumin slowed down the growth of all five breast cancer lines. The genes that promote breast cancer development were deactivated, and the genes that suppress cancer cell development were activated. The reason these compounds worked so well together is because the DHA helped the breast cancer cells absorb the effects of curcumin. That’s why off topic… the DHA was what HELPED the curcumin be absorbed, which I’m seeing again and again.

To aid with the absorption of curcumin take it with the supplement, or with the following foods:
1. Fatty wild fish like Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon, tuna, sardines, sablefish, anchovies, herring and mackerel, or a good Omega Supplement
2. Organic dairy products along with naturally raised meats and poultry. (think undenatured whey for your healthy dairy)
3. Oils with low omega-6 fat content such as organic olive oil and organic macademia oil.

I recommend the Bell Lifestyle Curcumin product because it’s all very easy to figure out as far as ingredients, and it says exactly what is in there. Under $30 including shipping is an amazing deal that you just can’t pass up. I would say taking 1 – 4 Curcumin capsules with a green smoothie and undenatured whey in the morning, and/or 1 – 4 capsules of Curcumin with a good salmon salad with olive oil dressing in the evening for someone with an old injury may be the place to start to feel health empower. They are saying 200 – 400 mg of curcumin is a good place to start, and that’s (1) capsule of the Bell Lifestyle Curcumin, and that’s if you are absorbing it, and if you do not have a very acidic stomach. {For those people you may want to also add some good enzymes and/or probiotics to your daily routine}

And with some of these other illnesses, more seems to work better. They are using upwards of 8,000 mg of curcumin (with cancer) but not only with added omega’s, but with added black pepper. (The recommended dose of curcumin of four a day is about 1400 mg a day) So you could use with this a good black pepper essential oil in a capsule with turmeric tea, Bell Lifestyle has pepper already added in, or used when cooking your salmon up to help increase the properties of curcumin. Piperine is a pungent compound found in the fruit of the plants in the Piperaceae family, the most famous member of which is Piper nigrum, black pepper. It can increase the bioavailability of the cancer, inflammation and infection fighter, curcumin, by twenty-fold.

So remember, as with all of these products, it’s not necessarily one size fits all, so think about what you nee, how the ingredients are working for you, and with any major questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

University of Minnesota … People with adequate vitamin D levels at the start of the study tended to lose more weight than those with low levels, even though everyone reduced their calorie intake equally.
